Manufacturer warranty language may use specific coastal distances, but those limits are product-specific. Treat a generic “coastal approved” statement as incomplete until the actual product, substrate, coating, fastener and warranty requirements are identified.
HOW SALT AND MOISTURE ACCELERATE CORROSION
Salt residue attracts and holds moisture. On susceptible metals, that electrolyte supports corrosion. Scratches, field-cut edges, coating damage, trapped debris and standing water can create concentrated problem areas. Wind can lift unsealed shingles, break or displace tile, loosen ridge material and damage accessories. Repeated ultraviolet exposure and thermal cycling age sealants and exposed components. Foot traffic during other trades' work can crack tile or disturb shingles, creating defects that appear later.
